          • Public safety is a top priority in the City of Santa Monica.   In 2022, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism began a piloted Tourism Improvement District (TID) program.

          • Santa Monica Travel and Tourism employs a third-party vendor, Chrysalis, to conduct the 7 day a week cleanup service. The TID program works to support the city’s efforts for a clean and safe Santa Monica

          • Santa Monica Police Pier Substation is located on the Pier itself.

          • Santa Monica Fire Department continues to maintain a Class 1 ISO rating, the highest possible rating.

          ACCESSIBILITY

          • SUPPLY CHAIN LOGISTICS:  Ease in supply chain logistics with proximity  to LAX Airport, Los Angeles / Long Beach Ports, and the rest of California via nearby 10 and 405 freeways.

          • PIER BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT: The Pier Bridge is a vital pedestrian link and vehicular route to the Santa Monica Pier.  The Pier Bridge Replacement Project is set to replace the 84-year-old bridge to provide improved infrastructure for the residents, pier businesses, and visitors to get to the Pier.  Construction is to be completed prior to the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.

          • PARKING:  Parking is plentiful and the closest parking lot is at the bottom of the ramp on the Pier itself.  More parking is available at Lot 1 North, located immediately north of the Pier.

          • ACCESS BY CAR:  If you’re coming to the Pier by car, take the ramp located at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue down to the Pier.
          • From I-10 West, exit 1-A to 4th & 5th streets, stay in the right lane to make a right on 4th Street at the light.  Make the first left on Colorado Boulevard and drive straight until you hit Ocean Ave. Turn left onto Ocean Ave. Make a right on Seaside Terrace – this is a small side street after the traffic light onto Pacific Coast Highway.  Take the next right on Appian Way – this will take you to Lot 1 North on the other side of the Pier.
          • If you are driving to Santa Monica on the Pacific Coast Highway, you can enter Lot 1 North by the beach directly from PCH. When approaching the Pier, stay right after passing the California Incline; as traffic moves left into the McClure Tunnel, stay in the right-most lane. This will take you directly into Lot 1 North. If you need to access the Pier deck from PCH, exit left to the California Incline which will take you up to Ocean Avenue. Turn right on Ocean; the Pier bridge will be on your right in three blocks at Colorado.

          • ACCESS BY FOOT:  The Pier is centrally located and easily accessible on foot from all hotels in Downtown Santa Monica, as well as Santa Monica Place and the Third Street Promenade. Simply look towards the sea and walk.
          • To walk to the Pier from Downtown, the best path is to walk under the historic Santa Monica Pier and Yacht Harbor sign at Ocean and Colorado and down the Pier bridge.
          • If you are on Main Street or coming from hotels and other destinations along Pico, head towards the beach and take Ocean Front Walk. This meandering pathway leads past ocean-front cafes, hotels, and the historical Muscle Beach to the back side of the Pier which is accessible by a number of stairways and wheel-chair accessible ramps.

          • ACCESS BY BIKE:  Bikes are allowed on the pier and can be rented at the Santa Monica Bike Center or next to the beach path south of the pier. Visitors can easily bike to the Pier from anywhere along the southern California coast, all the way from Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades down south to Torrance County Beach.

          • ACCESS BY RIDESHARE: If you don’t want to deal with parking, many ride-share services such as Lyft and Uber, routinely pick up and drop off passengers to the Pier every day.
          • Set your destination to 1550 Appian Way to be dropped off by the beach, and you can take the stairs or wheel-chair accessible ramps onto the Pier deck and drivers can easily exit back out to Pacific Coast Highway and I-10.

          • GREEN TRANSPORTATION:  Santa Monica’s green public transportation options include Metro, Big Blue Bus, electric scooters and the Metro E (Expo) Line.
          • The Santa Monica shuttle Circuit transports riders to the Santa Monica Pier, Downtown Santa Monica, Main Street and Montana Avenue
          • The Big Blue Bus can take visitors directly to Santa Monica from LAX and Downtown Los Angeles. The Metro E Line offers service to Santa Monica from Downtown Los Angeles, Culver City and other Westside Los Angeles locations.

          • OVERALL ACCESSIBLITY:  Santa Monica was rated the most accessible beach for families by Wonders Without Borders in 2021. Along the coast, beachfront parking, wooden access ramps leading closer to the water, an accessible pier, and complimentary beach wheelchairs are available to rent free of charge from three Perry’s Cafe locations on Ocean Front Walk.

Caroline Beteta, the president and CEO of Visit California.

“I think we’re doing pretty well; we are certainly leading the Los Angeles recovery.  Our hotel occupancy has certainly picked back up over where we were pre-pandemic.”

Misti Kerns, chief executive of Santa Monica Tourism and Travel.

“We are so excited for new business and international attention the upcoming Olympics Games will bring to Santa Monica, not only in hotel rooms and restaurants, but also retailers and experience venues as well.  The long-term beneficial economic impact from the Olympics will be felt in Santa Monica for years to come.”

Judy Kruger, President of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re looking forward to both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics... especially during the summer when we are already getting tens-of-thousands-of visitors each day,”

be a part of OVER a century of history

Constructed in 1909, the storied Santa Monica Pier was the first concrete pier on the West Coast.

Located along the east side of Ocean Front Walk near the Santa Monica Municipal Pier and the Looff Hippodrome, the beachfront commercial shops located at 1605 Ocean Front Walk built in 1924

At the time, the two‐story commercial building with three shop units at ground level and guest apartments/hotel above on the second floor were built in support of the Looff Pier, Santa Monica Municipal Pier, and the beach‐going environment of the boardwalk.  The second floor was donned the Overlook Hotel & Apartments.

During the 1930s and 1940s, The Overlook Hotel & Apartments was still going strong despite the ravages of the Great Depression. Another candy shop was located in the shop units just under the hotel.

By 1936, The Overlook Hotel & Apartments continued to operate as a lodging house though the shop units below at ground level were also both vacant of tenants.

In 1940, a new overpass was completed that connected Palisades Park bluffs at Colorado Avenue with the Santa Monica Municipal Pier. This new elevated overpass was built immediately north of the grouping of commercial improvements under review. At this time most of the shops within the four buildings remained much the same as they had in the early years operating as candy stores, restaurants, notions shop, and cafes.

Post World War II saw continued use of the amusement pier and nearby shops and stores along the promenade.   The Overlook Hotel & Apartments continued as did business in the  units below.

By the 1950s, The Overlook Hotel & Apartments remained at its location  while a billiard parlor called the Overlook Pool & Snooker Hall operated on the ground floor.

Ten years later the collection of buildings contained a fast food café with walk‐up counters (1601 Ocean Front Walk), a rock shop and gift shop (1603‐16031⁄2 Ocean Front Walk), the Overlook Hotel & Apartments, a sportswear shop (1611 Ocean Front Walk), and a café (1615 Ocean Front Walk).

Today, the buildings continue to operate commercially as they have over the past nine decades. They maintain their continued synergistic relationship with the amusement pier, the Ocean Front Walk boardwalk, and the beach front catering to visitors and locals alike.
